Website 'O the day

www.milkyourmoney.com has GREAT tips on how to save money!

AND I love THIS article on some fantastic tips around the house. Yeah, I know- usually these "tips" are common knowledge, but in this article I was amazed by almost every one! Getting rid of static cling with a safety pin? Using a paper towel roll with your vaccuum cleaner? Seriously, check this out- I bet YOU didn't know some of this stuff!

Why English IS the hardest language

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you,
On hiccough, thorough, laugh and through.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps?

Beware of heard, a dreadful word,
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead -- it's said like bed not bead --
And for goodness' sake don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt)

A moth is not the moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth in brother.
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear.
And then there's dose and rose and lose --
Just look them up -- and goose and choose,
And cork and work and card and ward,
And font and front and word and sword,
And do and go and thwart and cart --
Come, come I've hardly made a start.
A dreadful language? Man alive.
I'd mastered it when I was five.

Girl's BEST friend!

The famous Diamond District in NYC is just 2 blocks from my office, and I get to enjoy some pretty LOVELY window shopping as I walk to and from work. Today, I saw this GINORMOUS engagement ring- no idea what the price is, but this momma is 9.6 carat center diamond with two 1 carat diamonds on either side!

Good idea

Use BINDER clips to arrange cords and cables at your desk. Good tip!

Sad

Police have identified a woman who was struck and killed on the subway on Thursday- she dropped her gym bag on the tracks and then JUMPED DOWN onto the tracks to retrieve it. Unbelievable! People, NOTHING you own is worth jumping down onto the tracks for. Trust me, I dropped my diamond-covered wedding band onto the tracks when I first moved to NYC. There was a collective gasp of sympathy from rest of the people standing on the platform, because they all saw it happen too. I took my winter gloves off, and it was flung up into the air when I pulled off my glove. What did I do? I shrugged and said, “oh well, that’s gone!” No way would I jump down onto the tracks and risk my LIFE to get it!

HERE’s the article from the NY times. And let it be a reminder- if you ever drop something on the tracks, LET IT GO!

The End of the Line

As a consumer, demand to know where your seafood comes from, how it was caught, if it is endangered, and if it comes from a sustainable source!

Just like I learned by watching the movie "Food Inc." , I was absolutely blown away when I watched the award-winning documentary, "The End of the Line." Check it out! Seriously! It's so important to be good stewards of the sea and eco-conscious consumers of meat and dairy products as well!

For more information on this movie (available on netflix, FYI) click HERE

And if you haven't watched "Food Inc" yet (are you stupid or something?!) read more HERE

I love the news :)

Love my steamer

Remember how I posted a long time ago that I wanted one of these steamers? I got one!! Whoo!! Tgis thing is my new best friend. It's like a crock pot, but BETTER because it's so much healthier and faster! There are 3 stackable trays, and you can make your whole meal- chicken, fish, veggies, and rice- all steamed with NO grease or oil! Just plain 'ol water!

I really love it for EDAMAME too!! Me and Dan will eat edamame as a snack while watching tv- no carbs! And so much cheaper than take out- we buy the frozen edamame in the pods from whole foods or fresh direct and it's like $3 for a huge bag! Mmmm! Anyone else a fan of edamame?

NYC snow

I'm not gone!

Notice my absence from blogging lately? Well I've been CRAZY busy these past few week! If you're wondering, YES! I DID WATCH Canada win GOLD in men's olympic hockey! Amazing!!! I was so proud! But... I should have been watching that game IN Canada, since we were supposed to be at my parents' home last weekend. SHOULD HAVE being the operative phrase. Wanna know what happened? Ugh, it's such a LONG story that I'll give you the timeline instead.

Friday, 4am: wake up; it's a blizzard outside. (I've got pics on my iPhone, I'll post those later)

5am- taxi to Grand Central, Bus to the airport. Checking the flight status over and over: NOT Cancelled, no delays.

6:40am: they cancel our flight, just 20 minutes before it's supposed to depart. AFTER we already travel an hour in a blizzard to the airport. All subsequent flights are cancelled for the day.

6:41am: Me and husband are rebooking the flight to depart Saturday morning, and demanding first class upgrades because of the hassel. We get it. Sweet!

9:00am: back in Manhattan. I decide to go to work, and not waste a vacation day.

Saturday, 4am: wake up. Take taxi to Grand Central, bus to airport. Same thing all over again.

7:00am: first class flight to Boston, connecting to Presque Isle.

8:00am: arrive in Boston.

8:03am: connecting flight is announced that there is a delay

8:20am: ...a 6 HOUR DELAY.

9:00am: find out from USAirways person that the delay is due to a mechanical problem with the plane. I say, "What, you only have ONE plane? Call in another plane!"

1:00pm: still waiting

1:15pm: Flight CANCELLED completely. Next flight is at 4:30pm, but we are told it's sold out. Next available flight isn't until Sunday evening (and we're supposed to fly back to NYC on Monday morning!) so we decide to just give up and go home. They book us on a 2pm flight to NYC.

1:30pm: Leave the gate, exit security, and try to talk to the ticketing desk about getting our refund. They tell us the 4:30pm flight is NOT sold out and there are seats available. They book us on 4:30 flight. Our bags are now boarding the NYC flight without us. They run and retrieve our bags and put them on the 4:30pm Presque Isle flight.

1:45pm: They cancel us on the Presque Isle flight because of a weight restriction. Someone checked 6 heavy bags and now the plane cant take any more passengers. Jerk. We try to book back on the NYC flight (which is now boarding.)

2:00pm: running to board the NYC flight.

3:00pm: land in NYC. Luggage does NOT.

4:00pm: arrive back at our apartment, with no bags. After 12 hours, 2 flights, and $1,000 later, we are exactly back where we started from...but worse off than when we left because we have no luggage.

So, yeah. Didn't make it to Canada. Sad face :(
